The 7-day Machame Route, also known as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular and scenic routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. This route offers a more challenging climb with better acclimatization compared to shorter routes. Starting from the southern side of the mountain, you'll trek through diverse ecological zones including rainforest, heath, moorland, and alpine desert.
The Machame Route is known for its stunning scenery and varied landscapes. The 7-day itinerary includes an extra day at Barranco Hut for acclimatization, significantly increasing your chances of reaching the summit. Our experienced guides will ensure your safety and provide encouragement throughout your journey to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After breakfast at your hotel, you'll be transferred to Machame Gate for registration. Begin your trek through the lush rainforest zone. The trail is steep and muddy as you make your way up the mountain. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon and set up your tents for the night.
Leave Machame Camp after breakfast and continue through the rainforest. The trail exits the forest and enters the heath and moorland zone. You'll see giant lobelias and groundsels. Continue to Shira Cave, where you'll spend the night with stunning views of the Shira Plateau.
Today you'll cross the Shira Plateau and continue to Barranco Hut. The trail offers stunning views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding landscape. Arrive at Barranco Hut in the late afternoon. This is a shorter day allowing for proper acclimatization.
Today you'll climb the Barranco Wall, a famous rock scramble on Kilimanjaro. After conquering the wall, continue through the alpine desert to Karanga Hut. This is another shorter day allowing for proper acclimatization before the summit attempt.
Continue ascending to Kibo Hut, the base camp for your summit attempt. The trail passes through the alpine desert zone with its harsh conditions and sparse vegetation. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon. Rest and sleep early in preparation for your midnight summit push.
Wake up at midnight and begin your summit attempt. Hike in darkness through the night to Gilman's Point and then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight stay.
After breakfast, descend through the rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and then transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Celebrate your successful Kilimanjaro climb!
